Arsenal's Theo Walcott celebrates scoring against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

It was a mixed day for England forward Theo Walcott on Saturday, as he scored two goals on his return to the Arsenal team but couldn't prevent a 6-3 defeat against Manchester City.

Walcott made the game 1-1 and then brought Arsenal back into it at 3-2, but they saw their five point lead at the top of the table cut after an astonishing match at the Etihad Stadium.

Fellow England forward Jay Rodriguez continued his recent good form by scoring to earn Southampton a vital point at Newcastle United.

The striker, who made his Three Lions debut against Chile last month, cancelled out Yoann Gouffran's opener for the hosts with a second-half equaliser. Fellow England internationals Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana also played for Southampton.

In east London, Mark Noble and James Tomkins featured in West Ham's goalless draw with Sunderland, while John Terry captained Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace across the capital.

Hull City and Stoke City drew 0-0 in the day's final game.

In the Championship, it was a good day for England Under-21s strikers Danny Ings and Connor Wickham, who both scored for Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday respectively.

And in League One, Pat Bamford, who made his Under-21s debut last month, scored for MK Dons in their eye-catching 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
