Two goals and an outstanding performance from striker Joe Gatting helped the Seagulls to an impressive 3-2 win at Ewood Park on Wednesday evening.

The 18-year-old forward struck with just five minutes remaining in extra time to earn Dean Wilkins's men a plum quarter-final tie against Newcastle at St James' Park.

Manchester City also made it through to the Sixth Round with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest to set up an intriguing encounter in the next stage with local rivals Manchester United.

Both Brighton and Blackburn struggled to find any real momentum early on and it needed a goal of a bizarre nature to break the deadlock. Gatting rose well to flick on to Fraser, whose shot was initially kept out by a brilliant save from Frank Fielding.

Stephen Thompson was first to the rebound, but the defender's clearance smashed straight into Albion skipper Tommy Fraser on the line and ricocheted into the net.

The home side appeared after the interval with more urgency about them and were soon level. Fraser was once again inadvertently implicated; this time the midfielder attempted to block Kevin Pezzoni's shot but referee Steve Bratt deemed the ball had struck him on the arm.

Ryan Woods sent the spot-kick past Richard Martin to level the scores. Blackburn then took the lead after an error from the Albion keeper which presented a simple tap in for Dean Winnard.

Despite appearing deflated by the double blow Brighton managed to get back into the game, with the tireless Gatting sweeping the ball into an empty net and sending the game into extra time.

It was Gatting who won the game with penalties looming, getting on the end of a Joel Lynch through ball to complete a memorable night for the Seagulls.

Meanwhile Forest were forced to field an under-strength side as they battle with of sickness and the lack of experience among their ranks was punished by Manchester City.

The early pressure from City led to a breakthrough when Kelvin Etuhu broke down the right and outsprinted Matt Thornhill and coolly slotted home.

Bastians nearly levelled the match two minutes into first half stoppage time after Adam Newbold escaped his marker from a throw in on the right and sent in a low cross.

Gamble, who was having a fine evening in goal, produced further excellent saves in the second half. Most notable was a handed effort on the floor from Etuhu's powerful low drive from the left.

The game was wrapped up with twelve minutes remaining when left winger Karl Moore raced the length of the pitch and slotted right footed past Gamble, leaving him no chance.

Substitute Chedwyn Evans added a third with two minutes to go with a stylish bicycle kick inside the six yards box from Etuhu's knockdown header. Despite a spirited efforts from Forest it's City who will now face their arch rivals Manchester United in the last eight.
