AFC Wimbledon manager Terry Brown concedes his ambitious side came up short against Conference Premier heavyweights Torquay United in The FA Trophy, as the Dons slipped to a 2-0 home defeat.
A crowd of over 4000 came hoping to see a cup giant-killing, but goals either side of the break from Roscoe D'Sane and Lee Phillips saw the Devon side safely through to the Quarter Finals.
"I am disappointed but we lost to the better side," Brown confessed.
"They deserved to win.
"They are a strong professional side and as much as we huffed and puffed, we lacked that cutting edge."
Cheered on by a massive home support, Brown admits his side were desperate to measure themselves against Paul Buckle's high-flying side.
"The fans came here looking for a cup upset, looking to be inspired and try as we migh,t we couldn't force a goal," added Brown.
"Had we been able to score, the fans would have lifted the roof off the place and they certainly deserve it."
"I am a born optimist," Brown continued. "If we had beaten Torquay today, which we could have done, we would have been in the last eight and could have beaten anybody."
Elsewhere in The FA Trophy, Magno Vieira and Jamie Cook each bagged a hat-trick as Crawley Town romped into the quarter-finals with an 8-0 demolition of hapless Droylsden at Broadfield Stadium.
Four goals in either half saw the home side cruise into the Quarter Finals.
Droylsden's resistance lasted barely 17 minutes before the outstanding Vieira opened the scoring, with Cook's brace and a John-Paul Pittman goal putting Crawley firmly in control at the interval.
Dannie Bullman continued the rout in the 54th minute and Vieira grabbed his second with a quarter of an hour remaining. Cook completed his hat-trick minutes later before Vieira's stoppage time effort.
Conference leaders Aldershot eased into the Quarter Finals with a 3-0 win against Braintree Town at the Recreation Ground.
Stafford Rangers earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw at home to Tamworth.
The visitors took the lead inside ten minutes through Nick Wright, but goals from Kevin Street and Damien Jarrett put Rangers ahead at the interval.
David Bampton's 64th minute strike ensured another meeting between the two sides.
Burton Albion were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Histon. Nigel Clough's side took the lead through John McGrath but Robbie Nightingale's late strike ensured that the spoils were shared at the Pirelli Stadium.
Rushden and Diamonds cruised past Halifax Town with an impressive 2-0 win at the Shay Stadium.
