Keane and Scholes combine well in midfield. Keane spreads a nice ball out to Ronaldo whose whipped cross is headed narrowly wide by Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Dennis Wise breaks up a United attack in his typically tenacious fashion.

Darren Fletcher tries to play a through-ball for Ronaldo to run on to but his pass is hit too hard and rolls out of play.

Some showboating from Ronaldo almost produces a chance. Brilliant skill from the young Portuguese winger sees him turn inside his man and deliver a cross which Scholes nearly connects with.

It’s all United – Giggs and O’Shea nearly string a neat one-two together but Marvin Elliott shepherds the ball out for a goal-kick.

Keane so nearly scores! O’Shea plays a ball from wide on the left which Scholes knocks back to his skipper who shows a deft touch to flick the ball up and volley a shot on goal. Big Andy Marshall gets a glove on the ball and tips the ball over the bar.

Millwall show some life at last and win a corner. Good work by Cahill on the left gives Harris a shooting chance but the ball goes out for a corner. Livermore’s cross goes for another corner which Tim Howard claims.

Paul Ifill tries to orchestrate a counter-attack but Millwall run out of ideas.

Some confusion among the Lions’ defenders gives United way too much space in the penalty-area and Ronaldo shoots just wide.

From another corner United go close again, this time the Millwall clearance only going as far as Scholes 25-yards out but he can’t control his shot.

Millwall can’t capitalize on a free-kick. It looks as though they will need to start building on this sort of platform.

Ifill beats O’Shea for the first time, runs with pace into the box but rather than crossing he shoots straight at Silvestre.

Van Nistelrooy flicks on a cross from the right which Ronaldo, in space on the left edge of the box, collects. He shapes in and shoots at goal. Marshall gets a hand to the ball but even though the ball beats him, Darren Ward clears off the line.

From the corner Scholes picks up the ball on the edge of the box and fires a dipping shot just wide of Marshall’s right-hand post.

Gary Neville crosses and Ronaldo, again running in from the left edge of the box, heads down and past Marshall to give United a well-deserved lead.
