It was Obadeyi who eventually made it two on the half hour mark when Romanian keeper Alexandru Oprea fumbled on the edge of the six yard box and left the hitman to coolly tap the loose ball into the empty net.

A great run from Kieran Gibbs helped set up the third on 39 minutes as the Arsenal youngster tricked his way down the right wing before squaring the ball to Sunderland’s Jamie Chandler who rattled a powerful shot past Oprea from ten yards.

Febian Brandy made it three goals in as many matches just after the break, when Scunthorpe’s on-loan Chelsea midfielder Jack Cork split the Romanian defence open to allow the diminutive striker to fire home at the near post on 49 minutes.

Brandy’s strike proved to be the end of Oprea’s afternoon with the Romanian keeper receiving warm applause from the home crowd as he made way for Mirel Bolboasa.

The new keeper was almost picking the ball out of the net himself within two minutes with Obadeyi firing a vicious shot just over the bar before seeing a side foot effort roll agonisingly wide.

Obadeyi eventually got his second with 20 minutes left, hitting a left foot shot past Bolboasa after good work from substitute Josh Wright.

England goalkeeper Jason Steele had barely touched the ball all afternoon when he was called into action on 72 minutes, saving well from Jianu at the near post.

Obadeyi held off the Romanian defence to complete his treble with just four minutes remaining to leave England top of the Preliminary Qualifying group and in with a chance to progress to next year’s finals in the Czech Republic.

England complete their European Championship Preliminary Qualifying programme against Belgium at Barnsley on Wednesday evening.
