Wales 1-5 England

Victory Shield
Stebonheath Park, Llanelli
14 October 2004

Kenny Swain's England Under-16s romped to an impressive 5-1 Victory Shield win over Wales in Llanelli on Thursday night.

Despite having gone close with an almost identical effort moments earlier, defender Joseph Magunda scored the first goal of the game after he headed home a left-wing corner when left unmarked by a somewhat static Welsh defence.

England looked comfortable with that lead but then all of a sudden Magunda gave the hosts the chance to bring themselves level when he gave away a penalty for a late tackle.

England regained the lead through Daniel Sturridge and then soon after half-time a fortunate goal from Jake Thomson gave England the two-goal cushion they had been so desperately looking for.

A clever ball was played over the top of the Welsh defence for Thomson, who had operated in the anchor role for most of the match, to run on to.

The midfielder controlled the ball well and shot at goal only for the ball to deflect off the outstretched boot of defender Chris Gunter and loop over the Welsh keeper and drop under the bar.

Four minutes later a free-kick from the right side of the penalty area found captain Joshua Walker completely unmarked in the centre of the box and he had no difficulty in directing a looping header into the Welsh net.

England saved the best until last when Sturridge scored his second goal of the match. He started a flowing move by directing play out to Gary Bowes on the right win.

Bowes ran to the byline and cut a pass back to Sturridge who executed a superb turn on the ball before finishing high into the roof of the net.
