Sven-Goran Eriksson Tord Grip
Arsenal 4-1 Fulham Chelsea 4-0 West Bromwich Albion

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and his assistant Tord Grip were treated to a feast of goals on a capital night out on Wednesday.

Sven was at Highbury to take in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Fulham, while Tord should have left Stamford Bridge with a very promising report on Chelsea’s English contingent after their 4-0 win over West Brom.

Chelsea boasted five England squad men, players who could all play a major part in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Northern Ireland.

Frank Lampard showed that fatherhood will have no ill affects on his performances after opening and finishing the scoring with two goals and John Terry was as steadfast as ever at the back.

But it was the displays of Joe Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Glen Johnson that will give the England management even more room for confidence.

Cole and Wright-Phillips made their first starts of the season for Chelsea on the left and right of midfield respectively and gave Bryan Robson’s side a torrid evening.

There is a possibility that the duo could play on the flanks together for England and they showed how well they compliment each other when Chelsea doubled their lead in the 43rd minute.

Wright-Phillips fought off the challenge of Paul Robinson in the area and crossed for Cole to score. But they both exuded skill and pace all night and Damien Duff and Arjen Robben will have as much cause for concern as the Welsh and Northern Irish.

Glen Johnson did a steady job at right back and West Brom keeper Chris Kirkland reminded Grip of his talent with some outstanding saves.

But Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho saved his praise for his talented English contingent. He said: "I think it was a very good night for Mr Eriksson. I started with five English players and I think they all did very well.

"Joe Cole spoke on the pitch and not in the press. He played very well as did Shaun, who was very dynamic and enthusiastic. It was fantastic for Frank. I could guess everybody was going to have a special celebration for his goals. Everybody was enthusiastic for Frank becoming a father."

At Highbury, there were only two current senior England internationals on show and both were defenders.

With injured Arsenal centre back Sol Campbell watching from the stands, it was left to fellow central defender Zat Knight, of Fulham, and Arsenal’s Ashley Cole to try and impress the national manager.

Knight, who made his full England debut on the summer tour of America, got off to an inauspicious start as referee Mark Clattenburg awarded a penalty against him for a foul on Thierry Henry.

Lauren missed the resulting spot-kick as Arsenal’s Frenchmen went on to steel the show after Claus Jensen reminded Sven of last week’s defeat in Copenhagen when the Danish international gave Fulham a surprise 22nd minute lead.

Arsenal hit back through Pascal Cygan to level before half-time and he added a 90th minute strike too after Thierry Henry had also scored twice to take him to 184 Arsenal goals and within two of breaking England legend Ian Wright’s Arsenal scoring record.
