Rolando Aarons celebrates his early strike for Newcastle

England U20s winger Rolando Aarons helped Newcastle United dump holders Manchester City out of the League Cup.

On a memorable night at the Etihad, the Magpies started with Aarons and fellow Englishman Adam Armstrong, an U18 international, in attack. They made a great start as they took the lead on six minutes.

Aarons struck an angled drive into the far corner to the delight of his team-mates, including recent Three Lions senior call-up Jack Colback.

Under-21s winger Sammy Ameobi entered the fray at half-time, and things got better for the north-east outfit as Moussa Sissoko slid in the second to send Newcastle into the last eight.

Meanwhile, James Milner played the full ninety minutes for City.

Alan Pardew’s side will make the trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals after another Harry Kane goal helped Spurs see off Brighton & Hove Albion at White Hart Lane.

The Seagulls, who included Under-21s midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey in their line-up, made life difficult for their Premier League opponents and went in level at the break.

But second-half goals from Erik Lamela and Kane, his sixth in as many games, sent Spurs through. England international Andros Townsend was included in the home team line-up.

An exciting clash at the Brittania saw Southampton continue their impressive run of form with a hard-fought win over ten-man Stoke City.

Graziano Pelle curled in a stunning effort before Shane Long struck his first Saints goal to double their advantage.

Steven N'Zonzi hit back for the Potters before Mame Biram Diouf headed them level, but further drama was in store.

Stoke’s Peter Crouch, who won 42 England caps himself, was sent off for two yellow cards. And from the resulting free-kick, following his walk to the showers, Pelle drilled in the winner.

Three Lions goalkeeper Fraser Forster and recent squad member Nathaniel Clyne featured for the visitors, who also handed a start to U20 full back Matthew Targett.

The quarter final draw in full is:

Derby County v Chelsea
Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United
Bournemouth v Liverpool
Sheffield United v Southampton
