Session 5 - 11

Futsal: introducing intelligent defending

Use this game to help your young players become more confident on the ball and to improve their ability on it, whilst also introducing the idea of ‘cleanly’ winning the ball off their opponent.

    Organisation

Set up this 2v2 game as shown below. The area and distances can be adjusted to suit the age and ability of your players. Goalkeepers or scoring zones can be added if the players are aimlessly shooting at goal.

    How to play

The teams can score normally but they also get a goal if they can take the ball off the other team and make a pass to their teammate.

They can also score if they gain possession in their own half and can travel into the attacking half.

This set-up is great for adding extra players so you can also try it with 3v3.

The aim is to produce defenders who are not only good at defending, but who are also prepared to join in with attacks. This aspect of defending can be overlooked so it’s important to introduce it really early into your player’s development journey.
