Hodgson says Luke Shaw has the ability to become a 'top class' international

Roy Hodgson believes Manchester United's new left-back Luke Shaw has the ability to become a top class international footballer.

The England boss, who selected the 18-year-old among his 23-man squad for the World Cup, also said that he has all the attributes to emulate one of the country's most decorated left-backs.

"I really do think Luke has got tremendous quality. I think that he's really an Ashley Cole in the making," said Hodgson.

Luke Shaw profile

  • Born: 12 July 1995
  • Place: Kingston upon Thames
  • Southampton debut: 28 January 2012 (vs Millwall)
  • England representative: U16s, U17s, U21s and seniors
  • First senior appearance: 5 March 2014 (vs Denmark)

Shaw completed his move to the 20-time English champions on Friday - putting pen to paper on a four-year deal after making 67 appearances for Southampton since his debut in January 2012.

He made his England bow in the 1-0 friendly victory over Denmark in March, before forcing his way in to Roy Hodgson's plans in time to make the final 23 that travelled to Miami and Brazil.

Although the World Cup campaign ultimately ended in disappointment for Shaw and England, the youngster did get the opportunity to start in the third group game against Costa Rica - something that Hodgson will stand him in good stead for the future.

"I think the experience will do him good and also I think he will be a very useful player for us in games where we can use that enormous power he has going forward," added Hodgson.

"We agonised over those positions, especially in the case of Luke because it involved Ashley Cole who all of us love to bits and think is a great footballer."

Meanwhile, former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville - who formed part of Hodgson's coaching staff in Brazil - also welcomed Shaw's arrival to the club.

"Happy United have signed Luke Shaw," he tweeted.

"A massive talent. Don't expect the world straight away but give him time he will fly!"
