Martin Kelly is determined to win back a first-team spot with Liverpool
Liverpool defender Martin Kelly believes the 2014-15 campaign will be the biggest of his career.

The England international has endured a frustrating few years, ruled out for long spells with injury and struggling for game-time last season, but he is hoping that a run of matches in pre-season can propel him back into the Reds first-team.

Kelly, who is on Liverpool’s USA tour in Boston, is expected to play a part against AS Roma on Wednesday evening and in the build-up to the match he spoke of his aspiration to get back to the top of his game.

"I think in terms of confidence and feeling strong, I'm definitely 100 per cent, but in longer terms that takes games," Kelly told Liverpoolfc.com.

"You can't replicate that in training, so the more games I play, the more I'll get up to that peak fitness which is what I need this season - it's a massive season for me."

As Liverpool came close to winning the title last season, Kelly admits to feeling the frustration of not being involved on the pitch, but he believes that exciting times will continue this term – and he aims to play his part in them.

"I've been fit for a season now but I haven't had the games, so the run of games is vital for me this season and hopefully they'll come in this pre-season.

"As a young lad, you train and then you play at the weekend, so to train throughout the week and then not play at the weekend was difficult [last season].

"But I'm still part of the team, I was still travelling to all the games and I still felt a part of it. That's what was good from Brendan - to keep me involved with the team.

"I'm just looking forward to this season, enjoying my football, enjoying being here with the team and it's exciting times for Liverpool as you know."

Liverpool will play against AS Roma, Olympiacos and Manchester City on the tour – giving Kelly plenty of opportunities to boost his match fitness ahead of the season’s opener against Southampton next month.
