Man City defy Orient in Emirates FA Cup fourth round, despite Jamie Donley stunner

Guardiola's City have reached at least the FA Cup semi-finals in the last six campaigns

Leyton Orient lit up the Emirates FA Cup fourth round, despite falling to 2-1 defeat to giants Manchester City.

Jamie Donley’s remarkable 50-yard effort went in off goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to fuel hope of the League One side in staging a unique upset.

But Pep Guardiola’s side rallied in the second half as goals from Abdukodir Khusanov and sub Kevin de Bruyne saw them over the line.

Donley gave Orient an unlikely lead with one of the greatest strikes in the famous competition’s recent history.

The Spurs loanee lifted a speculative shot towards goal from 50 yards and watched it slowly dip onto the crossbar, nestling in off the body of Ortega.

The home side kept hold of their lead as Jack Simpson hacked a Bernardo Silva effort off the line and Josh Keeley made a magnificent save from Omar Marmoush late in the first half.

And Guardiola’s outfit needed a stroke of fortune to level terms on 56 minutes as Lewis’ low drive cannoned off Khusanov and in.

The visitors needed to dig deep to seal progress and did so when De Bruyne poked home seven minutes after coming off the bench.

Equally, Newcastle United rode their luck to claim a 3-2 victory over Birmingham City.

Ethan Laird put the hosts in front after just 40 seconds before Joe Willock equalised and in a frantic first half, Callum Wilson scored his first goal since May before Tomoki Iwata levelled for the Blues with a long-ranger.

Willock struck for a second time on 87 minutes to break Birmingham hearts and help the Magpies back up Tuesday's EFL Cup semi-final success.

Goals in each half from Georginio Rutter and Kaoru Mitoma saw Brighton & Hove Albion prevail 2-1 and dump eight-time winners Chelsea out of the competition.

Elsewhere, Femi Azeez scored twice as Millwall upturned the Championship form book to down Leeds United 2-0 in the day's early game.

Burnley became the first EFL team to knock out Premier League opposition this season, by beating Southampton 1-0 at St. Mary's.

January loan signing Marcus Edwards made an instant impact on his debut, firing home a close-range winner after 77 minutes, with little to separate the two teams up until that point.

Two goals from Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz prevented 2013 winners Wigan Athletic from writing another chapter in their storied FA Cup history.

Jonny Smith’s sublime curling effort briefly pulled the League One side level before Muniz latched onto a through ball and fired home to settle the tie.

Five-time winners Everton have played their last FA Cup tie at Goodison Park after they went down 2-0 to AFC Bournemouth.

Elsewhere, Ipswich Town survived an early scare to defeat Frank Lampard’s Coventry by 4-1.

Championship Preston North End needed a penalty shootout to see off the threat of League One high-fliers Wycombe Wanderers, after the game finished goalless.

There were no shortage of strikes as Stoke City shared a 3-3 draw with Cardiff City before the Welsh side won 4-2 on spot-kicks.
