Birmingham City booked their spot in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup with a comfortable 1-0 win at non-league Sutton United.

Willum Willumsson bagged the only goal in the first half as the League One leaders controlled the game throughout.

Sutton were unable to stage what would have been a huge upset and failed to register a shot on target in front of a raucous Gander Green Lane.

Initially the Blues were unable to create any clear-cut chances as the Sutton defence remained resolute but with 12 minutes left in the first half, they finally made their pressure pay.

A Paik Seung-Ho cross found Willumsson in space and his scuffed finish trickled past Sims into the bottom corner.

Five minutes later, Jayden Harris spurned a golden chance to level up for Sutton when he burst clear of the Birmingham defence but put the ball wide with just Allsop to beat.

Luke Harris tested Sims around the hour mark with a close-range shot, but the Sutton keeper stuck a foot out to keep the score at 1-0.

With 20 minutes left, Sutton began to press forward for an equaliser but rarely tested the Birmingham defence.

The Blues looked more likely to score with 15 minutes remaining as Alfie May’s cross nearly found fellow substitute Ayumu Yokoyama at the far post with the goal gaping.

As the game drew to a close, Sutton had their best chance of the half when Ashley Nadesan had a free volley at the far post, but his bouncing shot ended up on the roof of the net.

On a day where EFL clubs had it all their own way, Boreham Wood of National League South came closest to an upset.

They fought back from two goals down, thanks to strikes from Tyrone Marsh and Charlie O'Connell, to draw 2-2 with Leyton Orient and force extra time.

Richie Wellens' side had Jayden Sweeney sent off in extra time and needed penalties to avert a shock, winning the shootout 3-1.

League One Mansfield quickly quashed prospects of an upset as they cruised to a 4-0 victory over Curzon Ashton.

An early spot-kick from Lucas Akins set the Stags on course and after Marcus Poscha saw red for the hosts, Stephen Quinn, Ben Waine and Ben Quinn added to their tally.

Elsewhere, goals from Matthew Stevens and Omar Bugiel saw AFC Wimbledon triumph 2-0 over bitter rivals MK Dons.

The visitors hit the front in the final moments of a forgettable first half when Bugiel fed Stevens to steer home an opener and the Lebanese international striker bundled home a second on 51 minutes to make sure of the result.

In the last game of the day, Wrexham were upstaged by fellow League Two side Harrogate Town who had Jack Muldoon's first-half effort to thank for a 1-0 win.
