The Emirates FA Cup preliminary round offered up some thrilling contests

Silsden are into the FA Cup qualifying first round for the first time in 20 years after producing an upset victory over eighth-tier outfit Atherton Collieries.

In a bumper day of preliminary round action, Silsden came out 2-0 victors against Atherton courtesy of second half strikes from Kayle Price and Casey Stewart.

Price and Stewart are proving a dangerous duo this season, having also provided the goals in Silsden’s extra preliminary round win against Liversedge two weeks ago.

In the marquee televised fixture of the day, it was honours even in a tightly-fought contest between Northern Premier League Division One East rivals Ashington and Bishop Auckland as the contest finished 1-1.

Louis Johnson opened the scoring for the visiting Bishop Auckland, who are renowned as one of the most successful amateur clubs in English football, with 10 FA Amateur Cups under their belt.

But with half an hour to play, Frenchman Cyril Giraud delightfully fired one in for the hosts to equalise, with Ashington able to hold onto the draw to force a replay.

Elsewhere, a 97th-minute equaliser spared Bideford’s blushes as they forced ninth-tier side Wellington to a replay - Aaron Taylor the hero in that one to keep an FA Cup dream alive with a 1-1 draw.

Haywards Heath also produced a shock result against Isthmian League South East side Deal Town, knocking the 2000 FA Vase winners out with a 2-0 win.

Goals from Darius Goldsmith and Alex Plummer were enough to see out the victory, sending Hanbury Park into bedlam.

In the only game of the day to hit double digits, Binfield had a day to remember as they thrashed Longlevens 9-1 on their own turf.

Things were more tightly fought at Leighton Town, who hosted Isthmian League North side Waltham Abbey in an intense fixture.

With the game locked at 2-2, debutant Olly Miles got Waltham life off to a perfect start by netting the match-winner with just over 10 minutes to play.

It was also derby day in Liverpool as City of Liverpool took on Bootle in an all-Merseyside clash.

City of Liverpool emerged with the bragging rights after an entertaining contest, with Elliot Morris’ brace proving pivotal in a 3-1 away win.
