Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is determined to win the FA Community Shield

Thursday 08 Aug 2024

Erik ten Hag can't wait to get Manchester United's 2024-25 campaign underway at Wembley on Saturday.

United take on Manchester City in the FA Community Shield and their manager is keen that they build on May's impressive FA Cup final victory over the same opponents.

The match kicks off at 3pm and is live on ITV1 and ITVX. Find out where you can watch from all over the world here.

Ten Hag said:

"It is hard to believe that only eleven weeks have passed since we were last here for the Emirates FA Cup final, which was a fantastic afternoon for everyone associated with our club.

"As a result of that victory, we find ourselves here again today to face City once more, this time fighting for the Community Shield. We always aim to win every game we play and a chance to collect silverware of any kind is an opportunity to relish, so we are here today aiming to take the Shield back to Old Trafford. We know we can do it because, as we have shown before, this group is capable of beating any opponent when we play to our potential.

"We arrive at Wembley after a positive pre-season tour of the US, where we had some excellent time together on the training pitches in the warm weather of California, as well as competitive games against strong opponents. Then it was back to Carrington, where we were delighted to join up with the players who returned later due to reaching the later stages of the EUROs and Copa America with their international teams.

"Sadly, we will have to wait a while for Leny Yoro to rejoin the squad after his unfortunate injury in the US, but he is a signing for the long-term and we remain excited about his potential in coming years. We’re also delighted to welcome Joshua Zirkzee to the club and he is another talented young player who will keep getting better. There is also new energy in our staff and leadership group after the arrival of several new coaches, including Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy as assistant managers, and Dan Ashworth as sporting director and Jason Wilcox as technical director. They have all contributed to what feels like a very positive vibe around the squad and staff heading into the new season.

"Every day at this club we have the opportunity to raise our levels and take a step forward, and today is no exception."
