Emirates FA Cup preliminary round: Charnock Richard fight back to stun Bury

Saturday 19 Aug 2023
The Emirates FA Cup preliminary round brought several upsets and goalfests

Luke Power’s 96th-minute header saw Charnock Richard complete a remarkable turnaround and knock Bury FC out the Emirates FA Cup in a preliminary round thriller at Mossie Park.

Goals early in each half from Connor Comber and Jack Tinning looked set to take the two-time winners through but Jordan Darr halved the deficit just before the hour mark.

Power equalised with eight minutes to play before finding a stoppage time winner to send The Villagers through in front of a record crowd of 979.

There was also late drama in Devon as 10th-tier Okehampton Argyle’s kept their Emirates FA Cup dreams alive by earning a 1-1 draw at Buckland Athletic.

Argyle are making their debut in the competition this year and entered the preliminary round as the only Step 6 side remaining.

They will hold that status until at least Tuesday evening’s replay after Luke Alden’s stoppage time spot-kick cancelled out Josh Grant’s 35th-minute opener.

Michael Phillips’ neat finish settled the televised lunchtime clash between Horley Town and AFC Croydon Athletic in the visitors’ favour.

The Rams debutant sold his opposing defender a dummy before slotting in to the corner for the only goal of a close contest.

Progress was more serene for Bishop Auckland, 7-0 winners at home to Seaham Red Star, and AFC Portchester, who ran out 8-1 winners at Tadley Calleva with Lee Wort scoring four times and Josh Benfield contributing a hat-trick.

Milton Keynes Irish came out on top in a seven-goal thriller at Real Bedford, visiting goalkeeper Owusu Kyeremateng the hero as he saved a last-gasp penalty to preserve his side’s 4-3 advantage.

A similarly entertaining goalfest at Tavistock saw Barnstaple Town come from 2-0 down to win 5-3, while three goals in the final 12 minutes saw Hanworth Villa seal a 6-3 success at Crawley Down Gatwick.

Owen Brain took his Cup tally to five in two rounds with a hat-trick in Bristol Manor Farm’s 4-1 win at home to Roman Glass St George – a tie dubbed ‘El Glassico’ – while Harry Brown’s treble led Hullbridge Sports to a 3-1 win at home to Waltham Abbey.

Darlaston Town earned an impressive 3-0 victory over Hednesford Town and another upset saw Fakenham Town beat AFC Rushden & Diamonds 1-0.

There were two shocks among Friday night’s clashes as ninth-tier sides came away victorious at teams from the league above.

Owen Punselie and Alex Camm netted as Clevedon Town won 2-0 at Aylesbury United while Heaton Stannington won by the same scoreline at Hebburn Town thanks to goals from Andy Burn and Jordan Lashley.
