Summary of January 2022 Council meeting published

A Council meeting took place on 20 January 2022 and the main highlights were as follows:

Council Membership
This was the first meeting at which Debbie Hewitt took the chair in her role as Leader of Council.

The Council also welcomed Steve Thompson of Dagenham & Redbridge FC, who will be representing the National League.

The British Universities & Colleges’ Richard Allen will be leaving the Council in February to pursue a new football role in Japan and Martyn Starnes has stepped down as an EFL representative.

Brain Health in Football
The FA’s Head of Performance Medicine & Medical Insight, Dr Charlotte Cowie, presented to the Council on the various research studies commissioned to look into brain health in football. We will be working in collaboration with partners across the football family and other sports on these and will provide a clinical service for retired players.

Safeguarding Strategy
Our Director of Football Development, James Kendall, and Head of Safeguarding, Sue Ravenlaw, presented to the Council on The FA’s new Safeguarding Strategy for 2021-2024. Working in partnership with County FAs, clubs, leagues and others within the football family, the strategy’s focus is on building an ever safer culture across the game.  

FA Group Report and Financial Statements for 2020/21
Our Chief Operating Officer, Mark Burrows, provided an overview of The FA’s financial position, particularly the impact of the pandemic on revenue and the future financial outlook.
