Third-tier Tranmere Rovers secured a famous victory over Watford to set up a fourth-round tie against Manchester United in the Emirates FA Cup.

Having come from three goals down to draw the original tie 3-3 – and had the initial replay at Prenton Park postponed last week due to bad weather – it took another 120 minutes of action to at last settle the encounter.

Tranmere defender Emmanuel Monthe, who scored in that thriller at Vicarage Road earlier this month, was again on the scoresheet when he gave the hosts a 36th-minute lead, smashing home after Watford had failed to clear from a corner.

The visitors, who had made wholesale changes to the XI that started against Aston Villa in the Premier League 48 hours earlier, levelled after the break when substitute Kaylen Hinds scored on his Hornets debut with 68 on the clock.

With nothing to separate the sides after 180 minutes of football, the tie entered extra time – and it was here that the League One side found their winner.

Paul Mullin, who scored Rovers' equalising penalty at Vicarage Road, headed in after 104 minutes to secure victory and confirm a place in the fourth round.

Micky Mellon's side will now host 12-time FA Cup winners Manchester United on Sunday at 3pm, live on BT Sport.
