Lionesses hero Karen Carney pays tribute to 'selfless' coach from her early years

As our 21 Days of Positivity continues this week, we hear from England and Chelsea’s Karen Carney, who picks out one individual who has had the biggest influence on her career.

England's Karen Carney began playing football as a girl in the Midlands, where she was mentored by the FA's Rachel Pavlou

If there’s one person who deserves special credit, for me it's Rachel Pavlou because she was so selfless.

I think I'm lucky as I've had a handful of coaches that were really selfless and positive in helping to develop myself.

When I first started playing football it was with Rachel, who now works as national development manager for women's football at the FA, when I went to her soccer camps on a Sunday morning.

She took £2 of my money to play when it was often raining and miserable, but unknown to me, that money was given back to other female coaches to go and do their Level One and Level Two courses. I've since met some of those coaches who benefited from it.

I think it's amazing that she did that for them. She's so passionate about the game and she encouraged and created a football environment for girls that was never there when I was growing up.

And she did that selflessly. She could've kept the money, but she didn't, it was used for other female coaches to go and develop their training. I think that's amazing.

It was a nice moment when Rachel presented me with my 100th cap for England at Wembley in 2014

In those days, she could've been selfish and kept me on her soccer camps but in the end, she just gave me a list of football clubs and said I had to go and find a team, because you're too good to be here.

Since those days, she's gone on to raise millions of pounds for women's football to encourage loads of other young kids to play and to push the game.

These sort of people are so special, those at a grassroots level and who aren't getting paid with no recognition and very little reward. They're so key in women's football and pushing other people, which I think is amazing.

My advice to those who are doing is that even if you might think getting up to go out in the cold, the rain and the wet and wonder why have you've done it is hard, remember how important you are to the players.

The people that did it for me are the most influential people in my career and I wouldn't be here without them.

You might not get the recognition and plaudits you probably deserve but don't ever forget how important your job is and how influential you are.

Hopefully, if that player does go on to make it, they’ll remember who you are and come back to thank you for it.
