Jodie Taylor could not hide her delight after scoring for England at Prenton Park.

The 31-year-old began her career at Tranmere Rovers but never had the chance to play on the pitch – until Tuesday night.

The Arsenal striker, who was born in Birkenhead, scored the Lionesses’ second goal in their resounding 6-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Russia.

Taylor said: “It’s incredible to come back to Tranmere Rovers. The support was unreal.

“The town of Birkenhead and Wallasey and Merseyside have really got behind us and it would be nice to come back if we could make that happen.”

She continued: “We knew in ourselves what we had to do and I think it was a very professional performance by the team and 6-0 is a great win.

“First half especially we played some good football and made some good decisions so we’re really happy with it.”

England have two more home World Cup qualifiers before Christmas.

They entertain Bosnia & Herzegovina at Banks’s Stadium in Walsall on Friday 24 November (7.05pm KO) before hosting Kazakhstan at Colchester United FC on Tuesday 28 November (7.05pm KO).

Tickets are priced £7.50 for adults and £1 for children and concessions, and can be bought via TheFA.com/Tickets.

Group booking and Charter Standard discounts also apply.
