Opening draws for new-look FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup

Monday 28 Mar 2016
Arsenal defeated Notts County in last season's Final

There will be a Merseyside derby in the first round of the new-look FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup.

The competition has reverted to a straight knockout tournament instead of the regional group stage format which was deployed last season.

The draw for the first round was seeded, based on last season’s league placings, while the bottom five teams in 2015, plus Sheffield, have to come through a preliminary round.

Last season’s top eight clubs were all deliberately drawn away from home.

And Liverpool will make the short journey to take on Merseyside rivals Everton in the stand-out tie of the first round.

Arsenal, who won last year’s competition, will travel to Reading for their first-round tie, while 2014 winners Manchester City will face Aston Villa.

FA WSL newcomers Sheffield will host Durham in one of the three preliminary round ties.

The preliminary round ties will take place over the weekend of Saturday 7 May and the first round ties have been scheduled for Saturday 2 July and Sunday 3 July.

Both draws were made by young fans at Manchester City’s Academy Stadium ahead of the Citizens' 2-0 win over Arsenal – Gunners supporter Katie, 11, and City fan Poppy, 4.
