England's Danny Ings strikes in his first Merseyside derby

Sunday 04 Oct 2015

Danny Ings' dream week continued at Goodison Park as he marked his first Merseyside derby with a goal.

After earning a first senior international call-up on Thursday, Ings netted the opener as Liverpool and Everton played out an entertaining 1-1 draw.

He shrugged off fellow England international Ross Barkley to meet James Milner’s 41st-minute corner and head home from inside the six-yard box.

Everton 1-1 Liverpool
Swansea City 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Arsenal 3-0 Manchester United
Charlton 2-2 Fulham

However, the joy was short-lived for Liverpool and Ings as Romelu Lukaku equalised for the home side on the stroke of half-time.

An Everton side – also containing England internationals Phil JagielkaBrendan Galloway and Tyias Browning – looked the more likely to score as the second half progressed.

However, they were unable to find a second against a resolute Liverpool side, who had Nathaniel ClyneDaniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana in their ranks.

The draw means Everton have now gone 10 league games without a win against Liverpool – who have themselves now won one of their last nine Premier League away games.

Meanwhile, at the Emirates it was a tale of two different stories for two of England’s strikers, as Theo Walcott’s Arsenal ran out 3-0 winners against Manchester United, led by Three Lions captain Wayne Rooney.

The game was effectively over after 19 minutes, as the Gunners came out of the traps flying and found themselves three ahead thanks to a spectacular brace from Alexis Sanchez and a cool Mesut Ozil strike.

Ozil had Walcott to thank for his goal, as the England forward picked up the ball on the left flank.

He skipped past Daley Blind and delivered an inch-perfect low cross for the Germany international to slot home Arsenal’s second.

The home side were dominant throughout, and despite improving after the break, United were kept at arm’s length and were unable to find a way past an impressive Petr Cech.

And Arsenal could even have had a fourth when substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain broke through in the closing stages.

But his delicately clipped shot bounced back off the crossbar and away to safety.

Dele Alli and Harry Kane celebrate with Christian Eriksen

In Wales, Dele Alli, who like Ings was also named in his first senior squad this week, partnered Eric Dier in midfield as Spurs took on Jonjo Shelvey’s Swansea.

With Kyle Walker and Harry Kane also in their ranks, Spurs twice went behind, the second time when Kane inadvertently put the ball past his own goalkeeper.

However, two Christian Eriksen free-kicks ensured the points were shared at the Liberty Stadium.
