On this day in 1966 England were crowned World Champions
Forty nine years ago England’s greatest team reached the pinnacle of the world game, lifting the glimmering gold Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Over the next year, and in the build up to the golden anniversary of the 1966 victory, The FA can announce it will commemorate the year that England found itself at the epicentre of world football and culture.

Following on from a successful campaign marking The FA’s 150th anniversary in 2013, and the whole game’s Football Remembers programme around the World War One centenary in 2014, a similar calendar of activity will ensure the appropriate tribute to the first major international tournament to be played on these shores, along with recognising the unique achievement of Sir Alf Ramsey and his squad.

Working with partners including the Bobby Moore Fund and supporting the National Football Museum, a number of events will be announced by The FA across England that will mark the significant moments around the 1966 World Cup.

This will culminate with a significant event on the 30 July 2016, exactly half a century to the day that Bobby Moore was held aloft under the twin towers.
