England Women’s Under-19s departed for the UEFA European Championship in Israel on Monday with dreams of carrying on the momentum created by their senior counterparts at the World Cup.

Mo Marley’s squad left Luton Airport for Tel Aviv in the early hours before heading on to their team headquarters in Ramat Gamat to prepare for next Wednesday’s Group B opener against Germany.

The young Lionesses face Spain 48 hours later before they take on Norway a week on Saturday in their final group match.

The host nation, Sweden, France and Denmark will compete in Group A, with the top two teams in each qualifying for the Semi-Finals on Friday 24 July.

Head coach Marley has named an 18-woman squad for the trip, which they qualified for in unforgettable circumstances as England were forced to replay the final 16 seconds of their Euro Qualifier with next week’s opponents Norway.

After losing the original game 2-1, UEFA ordered a replay of the dying stages after an injury-time penalty from Leah Williamson was ruled out by the officials for encroachment. Instead of correctly ordering a re-take, Norway were awarded a free-kick, thus denying Marley’s side what would have been a crucial point in the Elite Round stage.

The replay began with the penalty and Williamson held her nerve to level things up before the final whistle sounded seconds after the restart to ensure England’s spot at the Euros.
