Tom Cleverley has signed for Everton, after his Manchester United contract expired on 30 June.

The England international confirmed he would be joining Roberto Martinez’s outfit at the beginning of June, and officially signed his five-year deal on 1 July.

And Cleverley, who has played for England 13 times, spoke of his excitement for the season ahead.

"I’m delighted to be joining because it's a fantastic club," he told Everton TV.

Tom Cleverley, left, was recalled to the England squad in June

"There is an all-round package with the history of the club, the great players that are currently here, the manager and the fans.

"It's definitely the club I wanted to play for.”

Cleverley, who spent the 2014-15 season on loan at Aston Villa, knows Martinez from another previous loan spell.

And the Basingstoke-born midfielder said the relationship they have was a contributing factor in his decision to join the Toffees.

"I think Roberto is a great manager and I'm massively looking forward to working with him again,” he added.

"We obviously had a year at Wigan together that I really enjoyed.

"He knows me and he knows how I like to play, so hopefully we can hit it off again come the start of the season.”

He also said that the prospect of playing at Goodison Park every week was another contributing factor behind his decision.

Tom Cleverley has spoken of his admiration for Everton boss Roberto Martinez

"I've always said it's one of the hardest places to come as an away player because it creates one of the best atmospheres, especially when the team is on top," he added.

"I’ve always enjoyed playing there. It's one of those really exciting grounds and I'm genuinely excited to be here."

The 25-year-old, who has also spent time on at Leicester City and Watford, was an FA Cup finalist during his time with Aston Villa.

And as he embarks on a new phase of his career he is confident, he says, of achieving more with the Merseyside club.

"It's difficult to think about targets so soon," he continued.

"But it's a club that can definitely be fighting towards that top six and hopefully go on a good cup run, which was something I was lucky enough to experience last year."

Before that though, his new side have a busy pre-season ahead.

The Toffees kick-off their summer schedule at Swindon Town on 11 July.

They also have games confirmed against Stoke City, Hearts, Dundee, Leeds United and Villarreal.

They begin their Premier League campaign at home to Watford on 8 August.
