England captain Wayne Rooney believes that spending the last week with the squad together will help ensure the Three Lions are ready to face Switzerland in their Euro opener on Monday.

Roy Hodgson's squad met up last Sunday to begin preparations for their first Group E qualifier against the Swiss and also picked up a victory over Norway in a game at Wembley last week.

And with the last three days being spent working at St. George's Park ahead of their trip to Basel, the Manchester United forward says the players are ready for the challenge at St Jakob Park.

"I think it's a nice game to play in," said Rooney.

"As the boss said, on paper it's the most difficult one of the group, and we want to do well and come out with a good result.

"I feel we're prepared, we're ready for the game, excited and looking forward to it. It's going to be a big test but we've got the quality to do well."

Rooney, 28, scored his first goal since being named by Hodgson as the new Three Lions captain in Wednesday's victory at Wembley.

And with the confidence gained from that result, Rooney is now targeting successive victories to boost spirits even more.

"If we get a positive result we'll give everyone a lot of confidence to go on and do well in this group," he added.

"We're focused, we came out here today [Sunday], we're ready for the game and hopefully we'll get the result we want.

"Of course there is a determination. We're a tight-knit group and are working hard to get the best out of each other.

"We've got a lot of quality in the team, it's about that coming together and if that happens tomorrow night I'm sure we'll have a good performance."
