Roy Hodgson spoke to Club Wembley members at a special lunch event

Roy Hodgson says England are producing more young players able to adapt from club to international football and believes it will one day bear fruit.

The Three Lions boss was speaking to members of Club Wembley at a special question and answer session on Thursday, and highlighted some of the changes happening behind the scenes with the national set-up.

As Hodgson looked ahead to his next game on the road to France 2016 – against Slovenia at Wembley on 15 November – he talked about the need to get players to understand the requirements of international football.

And as they learn and develop, he feels there is no reason why England will not achieve success at a major tournament.

"Of course it can be done, but it has to be done in a scientific way," said Hodgson.

"We've been talking about having players when they come into the England set-up at 16 and making it very clear to them what being an England player means, what it's going to require, what sacrifices they need to make, what standards they need to meet.

"Maybe we have to work on what we think is the best for us, ie England. When they come here they might say 'when the ball is there you are telling me to do this, because that's what suits the team but I don't do that for my club.'

"Well OK, do that for you club, but when you come with us you're with England now, this is our team and to make our team good this is what you've got to do.

"That will happen more and more if they've been schooled in the right way."

Hodgson also pointed to the development of the future generations and the talent within England's younger development teams.

While his focus is on the current senior side and their European Championship qualifying campaign, he praised the work of The FA and believes this are heading in the 'right direction'.

"Coaching is important and people are beginning to realise this. We are getting better, but we have a long way to go," continued Hodgson.

"I'm just hoping that the path The FA has started on, bringing in people like performance directors, thinking about every aspect of our work, will continue.

"As a result, if that does continue the crop of young players coming through will get better, will grow, so what's to stop us winning something?"

He added: "If Germany and Spain can do it, then so can we. I believe we are working in the right direction."

The Club Wembley Connections programme has given members the opportunity for breakfast discussions with Gary Neville and Michael Vaughan, executive golf days, hospitality at Premier League matches and concerts, among a host of other benefits.
