Lambert and Rodriguez deliver mixed bag for Hodgson

Rickie Lambert scores from the penalty spot

England manager Roy Hodgson was in the crowd as Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez was carried off with a knee injury at Etihad Stadium.

Rodriguez landed awkwardly after jumping for a header in his side's 4-1 defeat at Manchester City.

He had his right leg put in a knee brace before leaving the pitch. He was said to be displaying severe swelling so the club's medical staff returned him straight back to the south coast rather than a local hospital.

Rickie Lambert scored from the penalty spot to draw Southampton level, but as impressive as the England striker played, City could not be suppressed.

Fellow England man Ashley Young was forced out of Manchester United's 4-0 win at Newcastle United. Young came off with a hand injury less than 20 minutes into the match.

Yet another attacking England option, Wayne Rooney, was left out from the start as he battles against a toe problem. Rooney is also a doubt for the club's midweek Champions League tie away to Bayern Munich.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones played the whole 90 minutes for United, who are now sixth in the Premier League table, as Tom Cleverley watched on from the subs' bench.

Elsewhere, England under-21 forward Saido Berahino came on as a second half substitute in West Brom's 1-0 relegation-battle win at fellow strugglers Norwich City.

Frank Lampard scored his 250th Chelsea goal to help send his side back to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-0 win over Stoke City.

The England midfielder's penalty strike was saved by Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic, but he reacted fast to shoot home the rebound.

In the Championship former England manager Steve McClaren returned to Middlesbrough for the first time in nearly eight years as he took his high-flying Derby County to the Riverside - but it will be one he wants to forget as his side were defeated 1-0.

His Derby side had an England feel to it as he included current Under-21 internationals Andre Wisdom and Patrick Bamford in his starting line-up with Will Hughes named as substitute.

They faced a fellow regular in Gareth Southgate's Young Lions squad in midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah, on-loan at Middlesbrough from Chelsea.

It was a game of few chances, and looked as if it would end as a drab goalless affair until Chalobah broke the deadlock and opened his Boro account. He met an Emmanuel Ledesma pass on 70 minutes and coolly finished left-footed across the goal from 10 yards.

In League One, MK Dons and England Under-18 starlet Dele Alli found the net as his side defeated Coventry City 2-1.

The 17-year-old has scored seven times from midfield for MK Dons this season, and is in contention for a starting place in Neil Dewsnip's U18 squad to face Germany at Rotherham on 16 April.
