How's it structured? This is a two-day course that is hosted at The FA’s national football centre, St George’s Park and at external football venues on request.

It is delivered through a range of practical and theory workshops, with supporting demonstrations and question and answer sessions to meet all your needs.

There is a minimum recommendation of 12-16 hours of pre-course preparation and a pre-course assessment plus certificates from online learning to be submitted in advance of attendance.

what are the learning Outcomes?

The course will support you to better deal with life and limb threatening injuries on the field of play. But it’s important to note that concentrates only on those injuries that pose a threat to life and limb and will not cover basic management of musculoskeletal and other common injuries in football.

Content on the day will focus on:

  • Medico-legal issues and duty of care in football
  • Emergency action planning for football
  • Primary A-E approach of the injured player
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest in football
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) with use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED)
  • Airway management and oxygen therapy
  • Limb threatening fractures/ dislocations and their emergency management
  • Head injuries and The FA concussion guidelines
  • Spinal injury and management (inclusive of extrication)
  • Medical emergencies in football

Who’s it for?The course is aimed at graduate medical and allied medical health care professionals. However, if you are assisting with medical care on the field of play and have vast experience of first aid delivery, this course could also be for you.

Special consideration will be given to you if if you are a masseur, fitness trainer, sports scientist or coach.

The course assumes you’ll bring with you a level of knowledge and competencies, therefore as a minimum, The FA recommends that learners must:

  • • Have a medical degree (registered with GMC)
    • Be a Physiotherapist/Paramedic registered with the HCPC
    • Be a practicing nurse registered with the RCN
    • Be a graduate sports therapist
    • Be a graduate sports rehabilitator registered with the British Association of Rehabilitators of in Sport
    • Be working/studying towards one of the above as an established (final 6 months) third year student
    • Special consideration will be given to you if you are a masseur, sports psychologist, osteopath, chiropractor, fitness trainer or sports scientist who assist the medical practitioners at your club on a regular basis with player care. However, for these practitioners it is essential that you have successfully completed The FA Level 3 Emergency Medical First Aid in Football (EMFAiF) course in the past two years and have a letter of support from the medical practitioners at your club.

We do accept a small selection of non-FA medical courses as pre-requisite qualifications for our medical courses. You can access information on the courses which we accept here.

The tutors were absolutely fantastic!! Easily approached and only too happy to help with anything that students struggled with.

WHAT YOU’LL BE ABLE TO DO WITH THIS QUALIFICATIONThis is the fourth course on our medical pathway, and by completing it you will be in a position to act as the primary care provider in the sports, pre-hospital environment of football.

The next step on the medical pathway would be The FA Advanced Trauma Medical Management in Football (ATMMiF), which is designed to address the needs of doctors and physiotherapists that are responsible for leading their medical team in the pre-hospital management of an acutely injured/ill footballer.

This may not be relevant for you, which means remaining accredited on the ITMMiF will suit your role in the game. However, due to the nature and responsibility associated with first aid provision, and in line with current UK guidelines, this qualification will need renewed every three years. Please check with your corresponding league for the recommended level of qualification required for your role in football.

So, to remain qualified and ‘in-date’ beyond the initial three-year period, you’ll have to commit to taking and passing another FA ITMMiF course within the final three months prior to expiry of your qualification and in the subsequent three year periods thereafter.

In the interim period, The FA ITMMiF Faculty strongly recommend bi-monthly training to maintain competency.
