SESSION: Making the step from 7v7 to 11v11 football

Moving from one format of the game to another can be a challenge for both players and coaches alike.

Here, Ian Bateman, FA youth coach educator, provides a variety of practical solutions to deal with the transition between the 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11 formats of the game.

    Key objectives

    • How to apply formations, tactics and strategies in 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11 football.

    • Applying the attacking principles of play:

      - creating space using width and length
      - exploiting space using individual/combination play.

    • Applying the defensive principles of play, e.g. working as individuals and units to remain compact and prevent the opposition playing through, round or over to create chances.

    • How to engage individuals and units as part of a team practice.

    QUESTIONS
After you have watched this, ask yourself the following questions:

    • How would you adapt or tweak the practice to make it appropriate to your own players?
    • What additional challenges could you set to make the practice easier or harder for individuals or your group?
