Learn more about teaching and officiating the game of Futsal

futsal coaching

Futsal is a game in its own right and as such has its own tactics, techniques and skills that need to be mastered. With the game being very new to this country, the understanding and knowledge of these areas is limited. For Futsal to grow and develop and have an impact on player development, The FA recognises the importance of ensuring that there is an appropriate and structured Futsal coach education pathway and programme in place to support coaches across the country who are keen to deliver Futsal.

As in all sports, it is important that coaches and referees are properly qualified and have attended the appropriate coaching and training courses to support them in effectively developing players and maintaining participant enjoyment in the activity as well as fully understanding the laws of the game. Futsal is no different, and The FA recommends that Futsal coaches, teachers and referees attend the FA Futsal coaching and referees courses.

The FA is continuing to develop Futsal coaching and officials courses to ensure that they meet the needs of English coaches and referees. Currently The FA runs the following courses:-

FA Coaching Futsal: A Beginner's Guide (6 hour course)

The aim of this course is to provide candidates with an understanding of the techniques and skills related to the game of Futsal. This course will help candidates organise and deliver basic Futsal practices. It will also provide candidates with an introduction to the structure of the game, the laws and the role Futsal can play in developing underlying skills and techniques along with developing an awareness of the role Futsal can play in the development of young players.

The only prerequisite for this course is that candidates must be 16 years old or over.

FA Coaching Futsal: Level 1 (35 hours)

* This coaching course is still being developed and is due to be completed in the Summer 2012 *

This course is for individuals wishing to understand more about the three core strands of Futsal: defending, attacking and counter-attacking/ transitional play which is required for coaching Futsal. The aim of this course is to provide candidates with an understanding of the application of Futsal techniques and skills within Futsal game play. This course will help candidates organise and deliver game related Futsal practices based across the three core strands. It will also provide candidates with an introduction to the structure of team play, the Laws and the role the game of Futsal can play in developing underlying skills and techniques.

This course will be divided between 24 assisted learning hours and 11 unassisted hours. The course pre-requisite is that candidates must have:-

• Attended ‘The FA Coaching Futsal: A Beginners Guide’ course.

FA Futsal Referees Course (10 hours)

The course is designed to be flexible to include the delivery of practical courses and focus on practical referee skills as well as knowledge of the FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game. It is aimed at providing candidates aged 14 and over with the knowledge and skills required to officiate in Futsal within England and to educate about the FA Futsal Referees pathway and development programme. It is recommended that people with no previous refereeing qualification attend the ‘Basic Futsal Referees Course’ and if existing eleven a side football referees wish to receive training in officiating in Futsal; they should attend a ‘Conversion Course’.

The FA Futsal Referees course aims to be run over 10 hours classroom/practical time including two hours for examinations. The conversion course for existing eleven a side referees is aimed to be run in one session lasting three hours including the examination at the end.
