Spurs and Burnley require replay after Turf Moor draw

Nacer Chadli’s second-half strike was cancelled out by substitute Sam Vokes as both teams were made to settle for a replay.

The opening period proved much of a non-event. With little to separate the two, Tottenham looked marginally more threatening in possession, but remained unable to create any clear-cut chances.

Christian Eriksen’s free-kick was well contained, Chadli’s hopeful cross came to nothing and Paulinho may have done better had Dean Marney not thrown himself in front of the Brazilian when Eriksen had whipped one into the Clarets’ penalty area.

Mauricio Pochettino had opted to start Roberto Soldado ahead of Spurs starlet Harry Kane and it showed. The England U21 international has been in inspired form, scoring 17 goals in all competitions, and that potent outlet was missing throughout the first 45.

In fact, despite settling for a place on the bench, it was Kane who got the biggest cheer of the half as chants of “He’s one of our own” rang out while the academy graduate warmed up.

Burnley’s own talisman, Danny Ings, lacked service and on the one occasion that he did find space, the forward was stopped in his tracks by the opposition defence.

A repeat of the 1962 FA Cup Final that itself bore four goals and a fixture that had produced 25 in the last five meetings of these two teams, those statistics never looked like being replicated as both sides struggled to create.

To the delight of the visiting Londoners, Kane replaced Benjamin Stambouli as the teams returned after the interval and, as has been the case so often this season, the 21-year-old offered Spurs a new dimension.

After striking wide from distance with one of his first touches of the ball, Kane then chased every ball in the opening minutes of the second half to offer some much needed urgency to proceedings.

Burnley responded as Ings finally got sight of goal, cutting in from the right to drive a low shot at Michel Vorm. The Dutchman proved equal to it and soon after his side were ahead.

Kane released Ben Davies on the left and his pin-point cross was met by Belgian winger Chadli whose composed finish took a deflection off Mee before settling into the back of the net.

It took going behind for the hosts to grasp a foothold in the game. On-loan defender Michael Keane headed Kieran Trippier’s deep cross narrowly wide of the post and Marney flicked over after some excellent footwork from George Boyd.

Their reward eventually came after a fine spell of pressure had forced the leaders on to the back foot. Michael Kightly reached the by-line and crossed for substitute Sam Vokes who turned one home and equalised.

Though Ings came closest to finding a winner as the evening drew to a close, neither of the Premier League duo could claim victory and the tie will now be decided at White Hart Lane.
