Darren Bent urged to perform by Fulham boss

Darren Bent has scored two goals in The FA Cup this season.

Darren Bent has been urged to keep his eye for goal in focus by Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen, after helping to fire the Cottagers into The FA Cup Fourth Round.

The England striker has been in and out of the Fulham team this season, but Tuesday night’s opening goal against Norwich City was his fifth of the campaign.

And head coach Meulensteen was impressed by Bent’s performance over the two Cup ties, which saw him score at both Carrow Road and Craven Cottage.

Bent celebrates his goal against Norwich City.

"I thought he was excellent, and that's what we want him to do," said Meulensteen after their 3-0 win.

"He scored away from home in this round of The Cup at Norwich, and he's scored again.

"The only way for Darren to get more and more of those performances in is to keep doing what he did there.”

The former Spurs, Sunderland and Aston Villa man hasn’t featured for England in over two years, with his last cap coming in a game against Sweden at Wembley in November 2011.

But Meulensteen has challenged the 29-year-old to keep the form shown on Tuesday night over the rest of the campaign and beyond.

"If he does put that kind of performance in, the more and more likely it is that we're going to use him,” he added.

"That's what you want as a manager - you want the players to push each other and give you decisions to make."
