London Bees ease to victory over Oxford in FA WSL opener

Monday 14 Apr 2014
London Bees collected the first FA WSL points of the new season

Billie Brooks’ 25-yard free-kick rounded off an FA WSL debut to remember for London Bees as they made Oxford United pay for their missed chances in front of goal.

Brooks’ 88th-minute strike added gloss to the victory after Lucy Loomes had opened the scoring with a 20-yard effort in the 27th minute which United goalkeeper Demi Lambourne was unable to keep out.

It was the hosts, also making their WSL debut, who enjoyed the better of the opening, however, with Lauren Allison denied by Bees goalkeeper Sophie Harris when one-on-one before Kayleigh Hines hit the rebound inches wide.

Allison then saw another effort cleared off the line on 37 minutes, this time by Samantha Chappell, before Holly Pickett headed Stephanie Mobbs' cross into the side netting as United finished the half strongly.

And despite pressing after the break, United fell further behind on 70 minutes when Amber Gaylor intercepted a pass from Jemma Connor-Iommi before netting from 20 yards.

Brooks rounded off the win late on to hand the Bees the first victory of the new season.
