Will Keane has scored three goals during his loan spell
Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray has backed on-loan striker Will Keane to reach the very top with Manchester United.

The 20-year-old moved to Hillsborough from Old Trafford in January in a deal that will keep him with the Sky Bet Championship side until the end of the season.

Having missed the entire 2012/13 season with a knee ligament injury, the youngster had spells at Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic last season, but it is during his current spell with the Owls that his goalscoring form has returned – striking three goals in eight games.

“Will is technically a very, very gifted boy. He just needs to get a little more ruthless on the physical side. He’s gone from playing regular under-21s football and now he’s playing against strong men,” said Wednesday boss Gray after watching the forward notch his side’s second in their 2-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday.

“It wasn’t a fluke the goal Will got. He anticipated it would come off the post and he gambled. That’s why he’s going to be a top player and is at a top club in Manchester United.

“Will has got a good footballing brain. His touch is unbelievable and it will buy him that extra second. He makes good runs, reads situations well and tends to pick out the right options. That goal will give him confidence.”

Keane is developing a strong partnership with his new team-mate Atdhe Nuhiu up front – with the 6ft 6in Austrian U21s international netting the opener at the weekend.

As they prepare to face Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday, Gray believes the pair are a perfect match.

“I think there’s a good partnership starting to develop between Attey and Will. Attey takes all the batterings and Will reads situations and picks up the bits.”

Keane will be hoping that his recent run in front of goal will persuade Gareth Southgate to call him up to his England U21s squad for their clashes in Czech Republic and against Germany at the Riverside Stadium on Monday 30 March.

If you want to show your support for the Young Lions then tickets for their clash in Middlesbrough can be purchased in person at the Boro ticket office or by calling 0844 499 1234. Tickets are also available online.
