England’s Jesse Lingard is hoping for a chance to impress with Manchester United this season.

The 22-year-old forward spent time on loan in the Championship with Birmingham City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Derby County over the past two campaigns.

But after featuring for the Reds during their pre-season tour of the USA this week, Lingard has spoken of his ambition to become a regular under Louis van Gaal this term rather than heading out for another loan spell.

"The manager has not said anything to me at the moment regarding my future," revealed Lingard, who came through the academy ranks at Old Trafford.

"I am looking to stay for the first couple of months and see what it's like.

"Obviously I would like to stay for the rest of the season, this is my club. This is where I want to stay."

The current situation is not a new scenario for Lingard, who has featured prominently in United’s last two pre-season schedules.

And the Warrington-born star impressed his manager sufficiently enough last summer to earn a place in the starting line-up for United’s opening game with Swansea City, only to pick up a serious knee injury just minutes into that game.

He was ruled out for a number of months and was then sent out on loan to Derby County on his return to fitness, where he saw the season out with the Championship club.

But with competition for places in the United squad heating up ahead of the new campaign, Lingard is hoping he will have better luck this year and chance to stake his claim.

"The manager has been playing me off the right this time, and he said he would like to get two players for each position [this season]," he told Press Association Sport.

"The tour has been really good at the moment. I was [on loan] last year so it's good to be back with all the lads and the backroom staff."

Lingard was part of the England Under-21s squad for the Euro Finals in Czech Republic in June, scoring the winner for Gareth Southgate’s side against Sweden after playing a key part in the squad’s qualification process.

Prior to that, Lingard had featured for England at U17 level.
