John Carver believes Adam Armstrong needs a season on loan away from St. James Park before he can flourish for the Newcastle United first-team.

The Magpies boss has included the England Under-18s striker in a number of his squads since taking the helm at his hometown club in January.

But after a poor run of form, fans of the north-east side have been calling for Carver to give the young striker more game time and the manager is keen to look after his young hotshot in order for him to reach his full potential.

"It’s very difficult, people want Adam Armstrong to play and it’s a difficult situation for Adam because he’s a young player developing," explained Carver.

"We had a situation with Adam Campbell not so long ago, where he got fast-tracked and he got thrown in and everybody thought he was going to be the next Franco Zola, or whatever, and he wasn’t.

"It affected him. I don’t want the same thing happening to Adam Armstrong."

The youngster has been in prolific form for his country this season, netting seven times in just six games for the Young Lions.

He also bagged two as he helped Newcastle’s U21 side defeat Aston Villa 2-1 on Monday.

However, Carver revealed his long-term vision for the goal-getter, which includes a spell away on loan in the Football League.

"What Adam needs at this football club is to be out on loan – playing in the Championship or in League One for a good season – and we almost let him do that until Papiss [Cisse] got suspended," he told the Shields Gazette.

"He was on his way to Bolton or Forest.

"He needs a good season out on loan, in the Championship, banging in goals, as part of his development.

"But because of the circumstances we’ve had to keep hold of him, keep him in the squad, and use him sparingly."

Armstrong could be included in the Newcastle squad that welcomes Swansea City to St. James on Saturday.
