Goalkeeper Sam Howes says he will push all the way to be England U18s' number one by the next international break.

The West Ham United youngster was included in Neil Dewsnip’s squad for the double-header in Poland over the last weekend, featuring in the second match as the Young Lions recorded an impressive 4-1 win in Gdansk.

“The trip has been really good,” Howes told TheFA.com. “It’s brilliant to come away again to another European country and win two games. All the lads were excellent throughout both games and the ten days that we were together.

"I’m just happy to be wearing the Three Lions on my chest"

“Every training session was to a high standard and that helped the performances take care of themselves really.”

Having competed for the no.1 jersey throughout last season at U17 level, Howes and Freddie Woodman were once together again during the trip to Poland.

Each was handed a game each to impress, and although he was pleased with his own performance on Monday, Howes says the competition from his friend continues to drive him forward.

“For their goal, the lad has struck it really well to be fair and it’s gone straight in the top bin. It reminded me of the goal Holland scored in the group stage game against me at the Euros.

“But fair play to the lad, he’s pulled it out the bag and I’m sure he’ll never hit one like that again.”

He added: “I take positives from Freddie’s game and put them into my own. I’ve said it previously, our relationship off and on the pitch is really good and we push each other to the limit.”

Howes returns to the Hammers this week in confident spirits, and whether he is first-choice or not by England’s next game in March, he just wants to be pulling on the shirt again.

“I’ve got to keep working hard on my game and pushing on at my club to try and be number one for the next meet up.

“Whether by the next international break I’ve done enough to be number one or I’m behind Freddie, I’m just happy to be wearing the Three Lions on my chest.”
