Gary Cahill is eyeing a place in Sam Allardyce's first England squad

England defender Gary Cahill says he's determined to earn the chance to work with new manager Sam Allardyce.

Cahill, who is now three caps short of his half-century for the Three Lions, is currently on Chelsea's pre-season tour of the United States.

But that hasn't stopped the 30-year-old taking note of Allardyce's appointment ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

"I am excited to be working under Sam," Cahill told the Evening Standard.

"I'm looking to impress him at the start of the season and looking to impress him, if I'm fortunate enough to be involved in the squad.

"I'm looking to keep involved and keep that shirt. I've very passionate to play for my country.

"His appointment is an exciting one for us. It's going to be a change. It's going to be interesting to work under him, have his ideas and take them on board.

"It's down to me to impress him and make sure I hit the ground running so that I am in the squad when he selects them."

Allardyce's reign will begin with a trip to face Slovakia in Trnava on Sunday 4 September.
