England striker Jamie Vardy was on the mark again on Saturday, as he won and despatched a penalty at Carrow Road to set Leicester City up for a 2-1 victory over Norwich City.

The Foxes striker was named in Roy Hodgson’s latest squad ahead of next week’s Euro Qualifiers with Estonia and Lithuania on Thursday and helped to justify his selection in the 28th minute, when he was brought down in the box before scoring from the spot himself.

Stoke City keeper Jack Butland backed to start for England

Norwich almost rescued a point though, with England Under-21s forward Nathan Redmond cracking the woodwork with a late shot as Leicester hung on for the points.

Elsewhere, England goalkeeper Jack Butland kept up his impressive recent form by keeping a clean-sheet in Stoke City's 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, his international goalkeeping rival Joe Hart fared marginally worse, conceding a first-half goal to Newcastle United's Alexander Mitrovic at the Etihad Stadium, only to see the Blues bounce back and smash six in at the other end, with five of those coming from Sergio Aguero, to put them back on top of the table.

Hart was joined in Manuel Pellegrini's starting line-up by fellow Three Lions man Raheem Sterling, who was replaced by Jesus Navas at half time before City staged their remarkable comeback after the break.

In the day's later game at Stamford Bridge, Three Lions defender Gary Cahill started in defence for Chelsea alongside the recalled former England captain John Terry.

Ryan Bertrand featured at left-back for visitors Southampton in the same game, after being named in Roy Hodgson's squad to face Estonia and Lithuania next week.

And U21s captain James Ward-Prowse came for Southampton on at half time to make his 100th appearance for the Saints as Ronald Koeman's men picked up an eye-catching 3-1 win against Jose Mourinho's side..

Further north, former U21s defender Carl Jenkinson scored at the Stadium of Light to help West Ham United earn a 2-2 draw against Sunderland. Slaven Bilic's side had fallen two goals down in the first half before staging their comeback after the break.

In the Championship, England Under-20s midfielder Demarai Gray scored the opener for Birmingham City to set them up for a 2-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road.

Gray will now be linking up with Keith Downing's squad for their trip to Germany for the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup.

And England Under-19s striker Adam Armstrong will be heading into next week's Euro Qualifiers in good form, after scoring twice for Coventry City in their 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in League One.

The Newcastle United hot-shot, currently on loan at the Ricoh Arena, is part of Aidy Boothroyd's squad for games against Macedonia, Finland and Italy next week.
