He was also named as Roy Hodgson’s captain after Steven Gerrard’s international retirement in the summer and earned his 100th England cap, scoring in a 3-1 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Slovenia in November.

The 29-year-old took 27% of the votes, more than second-placed Danny Welbeck and third-placed Raheem Sterling combined. He also became the first player to win the award three times since its launch in 2003, following his successes in 2008 and 2009.

Rooney was be presented with his award by lead England sponsors Vauxhall ahead of training at St. George's Park on Tuesday morning as the team get ready for their European Qualifier against Lithuania on Friday.

The Manchester United skipper was also joined by England Under-18s forward Dominic Solanke, who was collecting his England Men's Youth Player of the Year.

Chelsea youngster Solanke, who is at the national football centre with Neil Dewsnip's Young Lions in the build-up to two games against Switzerland this week, was chosen by England coaches as their Youth Player of 2014.

His performances helped John Peacock’s Under-17s side become European Champions. He finished the tournament as joint-top scorer and was named UEFA's Star of 2014.

Solanke also enjoyed a successful year at club level netting the winner as the Blues lifted The FA Youth Cup and he made his debut for Jose Mourinho’s first-team during their Champions League victory over Maribor.

Solanke was then invited to join Hodgson and his team's training session on St.George's Park's elite pitch, along with 20 members of the senior squad.

Not out on the grass were James Milner, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines, who stayed in the gym following their Premier League games at the weekend.

Fabian Delph is still yet to meet up as he remains at home with sickness.
