Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick warmed up for England's games against Lithuania and Italy with a goal each as Manchester United beat Tottenham 3-0.

Marouane Fellaini opened the scoring in the ninth minute before Carrick doubled the advantage ten minutes later.

Then Rooney completed an impressive first-half display by making it 3-0 in the 34th minute when he coolly slotted past Hugo Lloris from inside the area.

Spurs, who had Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Harry Kane and Andros Townsend in their ranks, were unable to find a route back into the game in the second half and United moved within a point of third-place Arsenal.

Everton eased their relegation worries by sweeping past Newcastle with the same 3-0 scoreline in their clash at Goodison Park.

Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Aaron Lennon and Leon Osman all started for the hosts while Ross Barkley came on for Everton in the 74th minute.

And it was the young England midfielder who completed the scoring when he rounded Tim Krul to score in stoppage time. 

James McCarthy and Romelu Lukaku had pushed the home side into a 2-0 lead with a goal in each half.

There was also host of England stars on show as league leaders Chelsea were held by high-flying Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

Gary Cahill played all 90 minutes for the hosts who took the lead in the 11th minute through Diego Costa.

Meanwhile, Fraser Forster, Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand were in action for the Saints, who equalised through Dusan Tadic with a 19th-minute penalty. 

England Under-21 ace James Ward-Prowse was also a 71st-minute substitute.

Roy Hodgson names his squad for England's games against Lithuania (27 March) and Italy (31 March) on Thursday 19 March.
