Andy Carroll applauds West Ham fans after the 1-1 draw at Swansea

Andy Carroll scored a contender for goal of the month in an action-packed day as league football returned.

The England forward gave West Ham the lead at Swansea on the brink of half-time with a sublime piece of skill.

He perfectly controlled a cross before muscling through a crowd of defenders and lashing in a thunderous left-foot shot from the edge of the box and into the top corner.

Saido Berahino celebrates his late strike against Hull

Swansea got back into the game through Bafetimbi Gomis and it ended 1-1, but Carroll's strike will undoubtedly steal the headlines.

At The Hawthorns England Under-21 Player of the Year Saido Berahino gave West Bromwich Albion a vital three points with a 78th-minute strike against Hull.

Another England Under-21 striker was also on target at Turf Moor, as Danny Ings scored Burnley's second in a crucial 2-1 victory against fellow relegation battlers Queens Park Rangers.

It was a record breaking day for Leighton Baines, who notched the 45th Premier League assist of his career

The win was enough to move Burnley up to 16th, while QPR dropped into the bottom three.

At Goodison Park, Leighton Baines crossed for Steven Naismith to score as Everton drew 1-1 with Manchester City.

The assist, the 45th in the left-back's Premier League career took him ahead of Graeme Le Saux and out on his own as the defender with the most in the league's history.

Harry Kane scored his 18th of the season, but it was not enough to prevent Tottenham Hotspur losing at Crystal Palace, who snatched the points thanks to second-half goals from Dwight Gayle and Jason Puncheon.

Steven Gerrard comes out to warm up before the game against Sunderland

In the day's early kick-off, Jordan Henderson made a winning return to The Stadium of Light with Liverpool, as Brendan Rodgers' men came away 1-0 victors thanks to a Lazar Markovic strike.

It was not all good news for Liverpool though, as former England captain Steven Gerrard – playing in his first Premier League match since announcing this campaign would be his last – was forced off at half-time through injury.

Danny Ings celebrates with Scott Arfield as Burnley beat QPR

At the top of the Championship there was a good win for Derby County's Will Hughes and Jordon Ibe – who represent England Under-21s and U20s respectively – as they held off a late Ipswich Town onslaught to come away from Portman Road with a 1-0 victory.

Elsewhere in the Championship, England U20 captain Lewis Baker – on loan from Chelsea – made his Sheffield Wednesday debut from the bench in their 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

In League One, Baker's England U20 team-mate Ben Pearson made his Barnsley debut – where he is on loan from Manchester United – in the centre of midfielder alongside fellow Young Lion Paul Digby as they beat Yeovil 1-0 victory at Oakwell.
