Andy Carroll peels off after tucking away West Ham's opener

Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing were both on target to fire West Ham United to a comfortable victory over Hull City at Upton Park.

It was a poor first half from the Hammers, who five days earlier went all the way to a penalty shootout in their FA Cup Third Round replay win against Everton

But it took the home side just four minutes of the second period to go in front. And it was Carroll who opened up the scoring.

Stewart Downing celebrates v Hull City

Stewart Downing notched his fifth of the campaign

Enner Valencia unleashed a stinging shot from 25 yards, which Tigers goalkeeper Allan McGregor could only parry.

Carroll - who made his ninth and most recent appearance for England against San Marino in October 2012 - out-muscled Curtis Davies to prod the loose ball home from close-range.

It was the big striker's fifth goal in only his 13th outing of the season.

Valencia was again involved as he slid in Morgan Amalfitano to coolly dink the ball over McGregror to double their lead on 69 minutes.

And soon after Downing made it three. Alex Song released the England midfielder with a brilliant through ball and he held his nerve, tucking away what was also his fifth goal of the campaign.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

It was enough to clinch maximum points for Sam Allardyce's men, who also featured England Under-21s defender Carl Jenkinson in their back-four.

The result sent them leapfrogging Carroll and Downing's former club Liverpool into seventh spot in the Premier League, while Hull remain in the relegation zone.

In Sunday’s other game, England's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs both featured for Arsenal as they secured an impressive 2-0 win at Manchester City.

A first-half penalty from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud's header after the break settled matters at the home of the Premier League champions who had Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart and James Milner in their starting line-up.

England's next game is their Euro 2016 Qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on Friday 27 March. To make sure you don't miss out on tickets for the game, click here to buy online.
