Saido Berahino nods home for West Brom

West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine hailed Saido Berahino’s “fantastic potential” after the England U21s striker contributed two goals in a 4-0 win over Burnley.

The 21-year-old took his season goal tally to five for the Baggies with a second-half brace in the day’s only Premier League fixture.

Irvine told Sky Sports: “Saido can be very good. He's a terrific lad and very, very talented.

“I spoke to him at half-time and said to be patient and continue making runs. He got his reward for continuing to do that. He's a model professional and has fantastic potential."

After making his first-team breakthrough last term, Berahino is enjoying a fine season for club and country, scoring eight goals in England U21’s European Championship qualification campaign while West Brom move up to 10th in the league.

“I just try to do my best, I managed to contribute with a couple of goals and I felt good,” he said.

“Against Burnley we were on it from the start”

“Against Burnley we were on it from the start. It just shows how good this group is. We have stuck together throughout this period and our results are paying off.

“We have to focus on Liverpool away next weekend and make sure we get something there. But it has been a great week. Three wins."

Berahino was not the only English player to shine. Former England defender Joleon Lescott continued his resurgence since his summer move to the Hawthorns while centre-back partner Craig Dawson scored the opener on 30 minutes.

Former England Under-21s captain Andre Wisdom played 90 minutes at right-back and Craig Gardner played in midfield.

Burnley were without their Young Lions striker Danny Ings through injury, but international team-mate Chelsea loanee Nat Chalobah came on at half-time.

Watch Saido Berahino in action as England Under-21s play Croatia at Molineux in their UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification play-off at 5.45pm on Friday 10 October.
