Roy Hodgson: We've shown we are on the right track

Roy Hodgson says he's pleased his team have ended the year on a high following their disappointment in Brazil this summer.

England returned from the World Cup in June with just one point from three games, but have responded in the best way possible.

The Three Lions have won six consecutive games this season – the first time since 2006 – and will take a six point lead into their European Qualifying group when they resume in 2015.

And on Tuesday night at Celtic Park they added a 3-1 win against Scotland to their string of positive results.

"Going to the World Cup I thought we were looking in reasonable shape, a lot of optimism," said Hodgson.

"But of course the World Cup came along and we failed like we did, and that knocks you for six.

"But I'm pleased that the team has been able to get the ship back on keel and that they've shown that they perhaps were on the right track.

"There's a lot to expect from them because there are some good athletes and some good technical players.

"I think that as a team we're growing in terms of our understanding of what we want to do with and without the ball."

He added: "Of course there has been a slight change of personnel. There are a lot of younger players who've come in who were really on the fringes of the World Cup team, and actually ended up playing in the final game against Costa Rica.

"They're the guys now who've really been asked to step up to the plate and that's exactly what I think they've done, and we've even found a few more along the way."

One of those players new to Hodgson's squad is Nathaniel Clyne, who made an impressive debut against Slovenia on Saturday and followed that with another stylish display in Glasgow.

The Southampton right-back, who has international experience at Under-21s and U19s level, took his chance with the senior team and the manager says he has underlined his potential for the Three Lions.

"I certainly think that if we were to play in a week or two's time, he'd expect to be one of the first names on the team-sheet," said Hodgson.

"Unfortunately March is a long time. Nathaniel has shown what he can do. He deservedly got a lot of praise for his game against Slovenia and I would like to think he'll get praise for his performance [against Scotland].

"What he's got to do now is make certain he's still playing well for Southampton, because if I'm picking my squad for March within the next week or two, he's in it.

"He's done well. Let's hope he keeps his feet on the ground and he keeps improving, and hopefully he'll understand more and more what we've been trying to do in terms of our team play the longer he's with us."
