A number of England internationals starred as Premier League teams stepped up their pre-season programmes.

Wayne Rooney scored twice for Manchester United in a 3-2 friendly defeat of Roma in the United States – despite Miralem Pjanic scoring for the Italian side with a wonder goal from inside his own half.

Luke Shaw, Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley, captain for the game, all got a run out, as did Under-21 quartet Sam Johnstone, Jesse Lingard and the Keane twins, Michael and Will.

England U19 defender Tyler Blackett also played for United in Denver.

Under-21 striker Harry Kane scored as Tottenham Hotspur continued their unbeaten pre-season start with a 2-0 win over Chicago Fire. Aaron Lennon, capped 21 times, scored the second goal for Spurs.

Three Lions right-back Kyle Walker stepped up his comeback following a pelvic injury and Andros Townsend, another long-term casualty who was forced to miss the World Cup, was replaced by Lennon at half-time.

Meanwhile Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs both started as Arsenal lost 1-0 to Thierry Henry’s New York Red Bulls. England youth team duo Carl Jenkinson and Chuba Akpom also featured.

New Queens Park Rangers duo Rio Ferdinand, a former England captain, and Steven Caulker made their Rangers debuts in a 2-0 loss to Red Bull Leipzig in Germany.

And former Under-21 defender Joe Bennett scored the only goal as Aston Villa defeated Houston Dynamo.

Three other former England youth teamers - Jed Steer, Gary Gardner and Nathan Baker - all featured alongside Darren Bent, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Kieran Richardson, a trio with 24 England caps between them.
