England Player of the Year contender: Phil Jones

Monday 15 Dec 2014
Phil Jones played four times for England this year, but injury kept him out for the last two get-togethers.

The Manchester United man was just 19 years old when he made his senior international debut in 2011 and he now has 13 caps in his collection.

As part of Roy Hodgson's squad for the World Cup, the versatile defender played the full 90 minutes at centre-back in the warm-up match against Ecuador in Miami.

Then, against Costa Rica in their final outing in Brazil, he operated at right-back.

Jones was back in the squad for the September games, starting the 1-0 Wembley friendly win against Norway alongside Gary Cahill in the middle of the back-four.

He retained his place as the Three Lions travelled to Switzerland for the opening game of their European Qualifying campaign.

The former Blackburn Rovers youth player was forced off with an injury with just under 15 minutes remaining in Basel, and then a shin problem kept him out of action for the Three Lions for the rest of 2014.

He returned for Manchester United on Sunday in their 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
