England Player of 2014 contender: Jordan Henderson

Henderson featured in 11 out of 13 games in 2014

Jordan Henderson was one of 31 players to feature for the Three Lions in 2014 and played in 11 out of the 13 games this year.

His form for Liverpool at the start of last season earned him a return to Roy Hodgson's side for the last two matches of 2013 - and he hasn't looked back.

A mainstay in the heart of the team alongside his club-mate and former captain Steven Gerrard for the first half of the year, the 24-year-old has taken on greater responsibility this term since Gerrard's retirement.

The former England Under-21s skipper is Hodgson's midfield unit leader and has shown maturity beyond his years - and his 18 caps - helping the Three Lions finish 2014 with six straight victories.

Henderson's energy, drive and commitment is a real boon for Hodgson, and his physical attributes are allied with his tremendous technical ability, particularly his range of passing and ball retention. Rarely does the ex-Sunderland man surrender possession cheaply.

One thing that is missing from his international CV, though, is a goal.

However, his name was on the scoresheet for England's last qualifier of the year, against Slovenia, as he put through his own net to give the visitors an unexpected second-half lead at Wembley.

Rather than unsettling his team, it only served to stir them and within a minute they were back on terms and on the way to a 3-1 win.

At club level he was a key part of Liverpool's Premier League charge that saw them still in with a chance of the title on the final day of last season.

This campaign has not been as good for the Reds, but Henderson has already netted three times - including a strike in their win at Leicester City on Tuesday.
