Rooney was named as player of the tournament after the IC Cup Final
England striker Wayne Rooney capped off Manchester United’s pre-season trip to the USA by leading the Reds to a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the International Champions Cup.

Rooney, who was also named as the player of the tournament, captained United in their fifth and final match of their tour in Miami as new boss Louis Van Gaal continues his impressive start to life at Old Trafford.

And the 28-year-old scored United’s first goal of the night by volleying home a cross from Javier Hernandez to equalise an earlier penalty from Liverpool and former England captain Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard’s opener had come after Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling had been felled in the box by Phil Jones in what was a lively first-half performance from the England winger.

But a goal from Juan Mata put United ahead in the second half before substitute and England Under-21s forward Jesse Lingard made it 3-1 to bring Van Gaal’s first trip with the club to a successful end.

And Van Gaal felt Rooney’s latest accolade, albeit from a pre-season trip, was fully deserved given his overall contribution over the last two weeks.

"He deserved [to be player of the tournament] because he scored a lot of goals and gave a lot of assists," said the Dutchman.

"He was always a man who is a winner and the goal was very important for him.

"It was a wonderful goal when you see the attack and what he did to push the ball under the legs of the opponent but also in the corner of the goal."

The match also saw appearances for England’s Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young, with former U19s defender Tyler Blackett featuring as a second-half substitute.

As well as Gerrard and Sterling, Liverpool’s line-up featured Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly, Jordan Henderson, Rickie Lambert and U19s forward Jordon Ibe made a substitute appearance.
